By definition, ‘madness’ correlates to just one or a thing that is crazy. The Oxford English Dictionary defines ‘mad’ as:

“1. mentally deranged, insane.

In this Canto, Dante witnesses ‘insanity’ as the treatment of those who also chose to deceive throughout background myth.

Terminology is constantly changing and developing as the society which uses that continues to develop and change. Through this millennium, we now have readily approved the use of ‘madness’ to refer to foolish, restless enthusiasm, and also temporary madness or associated with anger. Formerly, perhaps it is to be considered this did not include always the situation, with the term referring even more to a mindless activity, or akin to a jester’s tricks.
