A relative essay of the poems salome c a duffy ...

‘Salome’ by Jean Ann Duffy and ‘The Arrival Of The Bee Box’ by Sylvia Plath have many similarities and differences. ‘Salome’ is ostensibly a poem about someone, most likely women, who wakes and discovers ‘a go on the pillow’ beside all of them. The composition continues to fine detail their quick actions and ultimately reveals this head is actually ‘on a platter’. ‘The Arrival With the Bee Box’ appears for the surface to describe the empowerment felt by an individual as they explore their control of a box of bees.

An interesting likeness is both poets will be female. C. A. Duffy was born in Glasgow in 1995 and it is the eldest of five children.

Plath was born in 1932 and was born in Boston. If you read the poems via a biographical perspective it will be easy to identify selected factors that the poet has included because of their personal conditions. Personally, I believe that the two C. A. Duffy and S. Plath have points to make.

For example , Duffy’s poem could possibly be seen to have many links to the role of woman in culture and the power they own over their very own male alternative. This mental attitude, which includes filtered through into her poetry, could stem through the fact she is the initially women and the first honestly gay person to hold the position of Britain’s poet laureate.

Similarly, ‘The Arrival Of The Bee Box’ contains subversive ideas of power and perhaps connotations to women choosing an non traditional role in society. In ‘Salome’ the pace, develop, rhythm and structure are all fractured. This is very effective as it reflects the psychological standing up of the tone in the composition. The effect is made through the methods of enjambment and rhetorical questions and these can be observed inside the fifth series “what achieved it matter? inches. The line is definitely isolated which draws the reader’s awareness of it.

Along with this the rhetorical issue then forces the reader to consider “what did it matter? . This emphasises the point to the reader that it does subject and is very important in the offered context of the poem. By contrast, ‘The Introduction Of The Bee Box’ is made of six consistent stanzas of 5 lines. There exists little by way of caesura and it therefore differs greatly, regarding structure by least, by ‘Salome’. Personally, I believe this is because the presenter is portrayed as being more collected and comfortable with the received power, relative to the voice in ‘Salome’.

The second line is an excellent case in point; “Square as being a chair many too heavy to lift. The vocally mimic eachother of ‘square’ and ‘chair’ gives a confident sound and in turn this can be noticed to indicate control and pleasure of power. The above proof suggests that C. A. Duffy and S i9000. Plath both have different suggestions on which method structurally is the most suitable to connect their concepts. However , In my opinion the free of charge structure of ‘Salome’ gives more than the rigid structure of ‘The Introduction of The Bee Box’ mainly because it generates extra dimension through which readers may have more flexibility to translate the desired which means of the composition themselves.

Crucial to the two poems is a theme of power and the connection it has with the owner, specifically women. The similarity and hegemony is attack around the stereotypical views that if perhaps allowed to stand could drive woman towards the periphery of society. In ‘Salome’ the voice is definitely somewhat of any ‘player’ and it is this scopophilic attitude which usually generates Duffy’s point. In a modern society it is seen as ‘cool’ or ‘macho’ for a man to sleep with many women. By comparison, if females replicate these types of actions chances are they stand a higher chance of getting bombarded with derogatory conditions.

It would appear that S. Plath could chose to concentrate more for the interest of power. She refers to diverse times in history (Greek, Servant Trade, Roman). This sets quite a theatrical atmosphere because referring to these kinds of superpowers throughout the ages allows the reader to understand the importance of power within our society in the past, present and upcoming. It illustrates the fact that in Duffy’s opinion (and I agree) that it is embedded in humans to seek out electric power and control others. Overall, both poets have identical themes inside their poems although chose to share them in several ways.

A similarity between both poems is that they make allusions to either faith based names or perhaps different parts of the Bible. C. A. Duffy in ‘Salome’ chooses to work with iconic Christian names such as John and Peter. While S. Plath uses the concept of a nirvana; “There may be the laburnum, it is blond colonnades, And the petticoats of the cherry wood. The description of this utopian environment could be from the feelings experienced the tone of voice in ‘Salome’ when she/it says ‘I saw my own eyes glitter¦and isn’t life a bitch’. The voice noises as though it truly is satisfied, rights has been carried out and it has reached a metaphorical destination.

This vacation spot, in my opinion, is usually that the voice feels like they have somehow reached equality by carrying out this repulsive act. A huge influence regarding language in both poetry is the personal pronoun ‘I’. This likeness is most likely because of the recurring all of them of electrical power in every poem. The narrators are attempting to express that they are the ones in charge. The language in both poetry is very basic but the phrases can be used in quite complicated ways. Both poets include chosen to never overcomplicate their language and I think they have built their poetry very available to all people.

Colours are used in both poems several effects. In ‘Salome’ the ‘red sheets’ could signify the anger felt by the voice intended for the injustices that have influenced them to carry out the atrocity. In ‘The Arrival Of The Bee Box’ ‘the petticoats of the cherry’ and the ‘blond colonnades’ are being used as the colours from the heaven. The utilization of colours differs in each poem but both work efficiently. In conclusion, I feel that Carol Ann Duffy and Sylvia Plath are both incredibly successful in presenting their particular ideas inside the two poetry.

The poems are still left open to interpretation and depending on the type of examining you undertake (colonial, biographical, etc) they can mean different things to different persons. However , Personally, i feel that ‘Salome’ is more interesting and mesmerising to the target audience. This is more than likely due to the fact I found ‘The Entrance Of The Bee Box’ also abstract for me personally and I found it difficult to grasp. I believe the poems have exposed my eyes not just in the inequalities felt by certain groups of culture but also to the disparities across the globe generally speaking.
