There are certain prevailing themes obvious through the duration of the story, just like race vs class, and religion versus faith; through these you observe the assault and fear that tear through Sue’s and Ashton Boy’s lifestyle and how they will confront that. From the start of the story, it can be evident that Sue adores her family and even though her and her sons have different beliefs she’d do anything to shield them.

Her daughters, however , are generally not swayed by simply her religious ideals and instead turn to the Communist Get together as their faith, “She had sought to fill their eyes with her eye-sight, but they may have probably none of it. And your woman had wept when they started to boast of the skills shed by a new and terrible eye-sight,  (814).

Of course during this time period, almost all southern white folks saw themselves superior to blacks and had no issue distributing tough punishments, just like breaking Ashton Boy’s kneecaps with a crow bar and deafening him.

The physical violence described is really real that their terror is real off the newspaper. By the end of the story, the violence and terror Prosecute and Ashton Boy was required to endure can be terribly surreal. Even though they could not believe that wholly inside the same issues, the horror they both confronted originated in a combination of contest and their philosophy. Wright’s interpretation of violence in his usage of language is what constellates contest, violence, and terror.
