How violent was the older west essay

When people think about the Old West they usually think about Cowboys, murderers, and violence. But how violent was your Old West really? I do believe the people in many cases are just exaggerating. One reason behind that are likely all the western movies that represent attempting to in a wrong way. They will show cowboys as guys whose only job is usually to have firearm fights with bad guys. Certainly this isn’t authentic.

Know something about the history of the Old Western world respectively the truly great Plains.

The Great planes were inhabited simply by Indian settlers. Their way of life was firmly influenced by the buffalos. They will lived in tepees so that they can conveniently move after the buffalos. In the the middle of 19th 100 years white settlers moved westward through the Wonderful Plains. For years the Great Plains were considered uninhabitable desert, only in about 1865 many settlers settled in that area. Because of that the people of buffalos decreases by simply hunting as well as the local Indians were out of place in supplies.

Likewise Natives experienced different beliefs regards to religion and land possession. All that with each other caused a large conflict between your Native Indians and the Europeans.

So much for the history. And now back to the question. First some facts about the towns in the Old Western: As you can see in Document a couple of and several the average murder rate in Cattle Villages per year was only 3. Even if all their population had not been more than several, 000, which is not a big number. On the other hand there were towns like Benton ” shown in Document 5. A city with typically one killing a day. This kind of town is a perfect example that shows that the Old West was violent. But not every community was like Benton, I think it had been an exception. In Document five you can see one of the law in western cities. It seems like all the stuff the Old Western if well-liked for will be forbidden. No carry of concealed weapons, no capturing or preventing powering of virtually any fire-arm, simply no drunken tendencies on public streets, simply no keeping of the house of prostitution etc. Either the people just may follow the ordinances or all those things which the movies inform us aren’t accurate.

Let’s take a look at western plains. In Doc 6 there is a report about the Fight of Beecher’s Island between elements of the US Army and lots of of the Plains Native American tribes in September 1868. The reasons in this battle had been raids of homesteads where 99 light settlers were killed in summer and fall 1868. Ten males of the ALL OF US Army passed away and 20 had been critically wounded when 35 to 50 Indians were murdered and at least 200 had been wounded. This kind of battle displays the assault of challenges in the West.

File 7 reveals a comparison between Indian Wars and other American wars. You can view that the American indian Wars were after the Battle of 1812 the less violent battles. In Document 9 they will tell real truth the fear of Indians and altercations with natives. Coming from 150 diaries, journals, memoirs, and letters only 12-15 reported main difficulties. That supports my statement that most of the people exaggerated. One other support that the Old Western world wasn’t that violent is usually Document 12. It says that lacking the two blood-lettings (Fetterman wait and Little Big Horn Battle), overcome deaths averaged about seventeen per year and even fewer. During my view that is certainly anything but violent.

To summarize I would personally say much of that the actual people think about the Old Western isn’t true. There are so many rumors and opinion. Of course it was a hard time and several people passed away and you aren’t say the Aged West was harmless, nonetheless it wasn’t that violent either.
