How william shakespeare shows malvolio in the

In Act two, Malvolio appears to be arrogant, puritanical and harmful. In this scene, he tries to stop Friend Toby, Friend Andrew and Feste via being therefore noisy during nighttime. When Malvolio enters the stage in Act 2 Scene 3, the first thing he does is definitely asking a series of five rhetorical questions. This is a large powerful blaming technique, recommending that he thinks extremely of himself and feels that he has the right to tell Sir Toby, Friend Andrew and Feste away, even though the interpersonal status of Sir Toby is greater than his. This individual asked all of them, “Have you no humor, manners, nor honesty? ‘Wit’, ‘manners’, and ‘honesty’ refer to ‘judgement’, ‘breeding’ and ‘decency’ respectively.

The truth that this individual asks them this query rhetorically suggest that he believes that this individual has better judgement, propagation and decency than them, emphasizing his arrogant characteristics, which can be quite irritating to the audience, particularly when they know that Friend Toby and Feste will tend to be cleverer than him. Additionally, he feels he provides better ‘breeding’ than these people, as they are not behaving themselves properly, yet , his disrespect and pomposity prove that his ‘breeding’ is just as bad since Sir Toby, Sir Claire and Feste’s.

The initially rhetorical problem he requires is, “My masters, will you be mad? ‘Mad’ suggests that what they are undertaking is absolutely foolish and unsatisfactory, especially when his tone is indeed serious, however in fact, they are only vocal singing and having, which are not necessarily ‘madness’, despite the fact that they are not behaving properly. He then describes their leisure as ‘disorder’ and ‘misdemeanour’, which are exaggerations again, because they refer to significant misbehaviours. This kind of shows that Malvolio is puritanical as puritans believe in a life-style without any luxury at all plus they see virtually any wrongdoing five times a whole lot worse than it really is.

Sir Toby rightly explains him as ‘virtuous’ in this scene, which Elizabethan times, means firmly religious and narrow-minded. If it is clear that Sir Toby has hardly any respect intended for him, this individual threatens him by showing him that Olivia will kick these people out of her house if they cannot behave. His tone is definitely serious and malicious, displaying his destructive character. In addition, even though Olivia might have stated it, the way in which he says chances are to be a much more malicious than Olivia stated, seeing that he has done that in the previous landscape, when he twists Olivia’s wonderful message to Viola into something actually rude.

The truth that he speaks to Sir Toby as if he is representing Olivia again displays his conceited nature, simply because he is just her servant while Friend Toby can be her kinsman. After becoming insulted and humiliated by simply Sir Toby and Feste, Malvolio leaves in anger. Before he leaves, this individual leaves a thinly-veiled risk behind simply by telling them that he’s going to inform Olivia what has occurred. This once again shows that he is malicious and he looks for revenge in people who do not treat him with esteem. In conclusion, Malvolio is shown as a great arrogant, puritanical and harmful character with this part of the enjoy.
