Choose two stories coming from ‘An Night time in Guanima’ that you regarded as the “best” or the favourite. Make clear the reasons for your choice looking at: theme, heroes and writer’s style. The author got her inspiration for anyone stories coming from her birthplace, Cat Island, which simple was at first called “Guanima” by the Lucayans. She frequently visited her grandparents in Port Howe, where, through storytelling, she discovered the fascinating regarding Bahamian folklore. Therefore , it had been for this reason ‘An Evening in Guanima’ was developed.

Among my personal likes is “The Girl for the Gallows” due to writer’s design – which I felt encompassed varied approaches; impressive portrayal and idea. Another favorite is “The Gaulin Wife” with its distinct writer’s style, ingenious portrayal and evident, clear-cut theme. I love the writer’s incredibly descriptive writer’s style; that paints picturesque scenes on this exotic land and enabled me to visualise the characters whilst learning about all their personalities.

“The sheen of Christa’s skin, the colour of honey via bees feeding on wild marigolds… and no less glowing and amazing was her hair” – this allowed me to effortlessly create Christa and Glinton conveying her individuality as being “sweet” told me the lady was a kind-hearted character.

On the contrary, the author used words and phrases like “jealous” and “spiteful” when describing Anacarla and this, to me, denoted a aggresive character. Christa was pictured as a turning into yet humble girl having a kind character while Anacarla on the other hand, was portrayed since “a cruel viper of the princess”.

This kind of made me dislike Anacarla although feel absolutely nothing except fondness and sympathy toward Christa. I greatly admired the way in which Glinton intertwined structure and meaning when discussing the bird-messengers. She structurally highlighted what “Princess” and “Queen” by simply capitalizing all of them and used each type of bird to symbolize both Christa and her impending success. The initially bird was common; a duck, this kind of to me displayed Christa’s modest social position as “a daughter of the common people”.

The second bird was a great iridescent parrot which, I felt displayed Christa’s undeniable beauty. The bird’s feathers were accustomed to fashion a bonnet pertaining to “a sour-faced woman who no eyesight for their beauty” and I got this to mean that this kind of woman did not appreciate the bonnet’s inordinately beautiful plumage. In the same way Christa’s turned down admirers and jealous opponents ceased to understand her splendor when she was sentenced to be hung. The third and final winged-messenger was a effective, majestic skull cap.

It was noticed that this was your only messenger that addressed Christa while “some-day Queen” and because of her expertise the bald eagle was able to rise above the atmosphere, thereby evading hunters. Coming from my perspective, the bald eagle soaring over a clouds represented Christa increasing in position and power to the exclusive position of queen. The theme of this history was that “Good always triumphs and bad doers end up what’s coming to them”. This made me experience optimistic that theme could hold true to real life.

I love the title of “The Gaulin Wife” because it is short and has an interesting key word. I prefer the fact that the title is brief because it will not reveal very much about the story, leaving myself to dilemna over what the story is going to entail. This kind of coupled with the use of the key word “Gaulin” piqued my personal interest and prompted me personally to read the story. The writer’s style included in my joy in browsing the story since it contained a great deal of Bahamian dialect. I sensed the copy writer infused the writing with Bahamian vernacular in order to give a “cultural flavour” to the tale.

This, in return, made the storyline more interesting to my opinion. This technique was used in the series “her mum musse shame frog or goggle-eye fish”. It was lines like this that showed me that the main character was disrespectful and completely thoughtless of others’ feelings. The author’s information of his actions as well added to my own perception of his personality. The fact that he promised to wed several girls before giving them “high and dry” showed me the narcissistic and down right cruel facets of his personality.

This portrayal flowed correctly into the theme which was “Bad karma has a tendency to seek out people who deserve it”. I gravitated toward “The Girl within the Gallows” for its writer’s style, my favourite approach being the imbedded significance, and portrayal – which will made me experience different feelings toward the characters; I despised Anacarla but sympathized with Christa. I chose “The Gaulin Wife” because of the use of dialect inside the writer’s style and the uncomplicated, facile, undemanding, easy, basic, simple, hard-to-miss motif.
