The Book Thief

Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief is a story about family. Liesel Meminger manages to lose her 1st family, her brother declining and her parents supplying her away. Her second family is the Hubermanns, Hans and Rosado. Partway throughout the story, Utmost Vandenburg also joins the family. Through the story, Liesel trusts her family more and more, and discovers to read with Hans. The girl writes catalogs with Max, and even recognizes Rosa a little more.

In the first phase, Liesel steals her initial book, The Grave-Digger’s Handbook. She doesn’t know how to examine it to start with, but eventually opens up to Hans and so they read that together. Jointly they go through, play accordion, and roll cigarettes intended for Hans to smoke. As well as when Liesel goes to university, she nonetheless reads at night with Hans. When Hans gets tired of re-reading The Grave-Digger’s Handbook, he trades some of the cigarettes that he and Liesel rolled for much more books to learn. Hans is the one who picks Liesel up from her mandatory Hitler Youth applications, walking residence with her in the peace and quiet that he knows she needs. Hans is always right now there for Liesel, as a dad and an associate.

Max Vandenburg is a Jewish gentleman who hails from the downstairs room. When Liesel first fulfills him, states that his hair seems like feathers. Duplicating her terms as he performs, Max will take pages via Mein Kamphf and chemicals them using white paint before creating his personal story to offer to Liesel. He publishes articles The Standover Man, talking about how his father was the first one who watched him as he slept and now it was a girl. On the last few web pages, he writes about how Liesel said his hair looked like feathers, and exactly how he hopes that they can always be friends. He presents the book to Liesel for a birthday present, and begins a friendship.

Even Insieme Hubermann, who also at first appears mean, turns into like relatives to Liesel. When Max falls ill, Liesel wants to sit watching him when he sleeps to learn when he will wake up. Rosado reminds Liesel that keeping home from practice would attract suspicion, and Liesel unwillingly goes to institution after Rosa promises to get her when Max wakes up. When Max does wake up, Insieme honors her promise to Liesel and pulls her out of faculty by deceiving to yell at her so that it wouldn’t be dubious. At the end of the book, Death says regarding Rosa “Make no blunder, the woman had a heart. The lady had a larger heart than people will think. There is a lot in it, stored up, loaded with miles of hidden shelving¦ She was a Jew feeder without a problem in the world on the man’s initially night in Molching. And she was an adjustable rate mortgage reacher, profound into a bed, to deliver a sketchbook to a teenage lady. ” (Zusak 532)

By the end of the book, a bomb is dropped on Himmel Street as well as the Hubermanns along with many of Liesel’s close friends are murdered. Liesel survives, along with Max, and now must deal with being with no her relatives. This book tells the story of the girl who have found her true relatives, before having all of them ripped from her. Actually Death, the narrator in the story, generally seems to regret that he is currently taking Hans and Rosa far from Liesel.
