Medea article summary

Medea, a play by the Greek playwright Euripides, explores the Greek-

barbarian dichotomy through the character of Medea, a queen from the

“barbarian”, or non-Greek, land of Colchis. Over the play, it becomes

evident for the reader that Medea is no ordinary woman by Ancient greek standards.

Central to the complete plot can be Medea’s philistine origins and how they are related

to her actions. In this daily news, I was attempting to get suggestions such as just how

Medea behaves like a woman, how she acts heroically from a male viewpoint

why the lady killed her children, in the event that she could have achieved her goal with no killing

these people, if the murder was determined by her barbarian beginnings, and how your woman deals

together with the pain of killing her children.

While an introduction to the play, the status of girls in Ancient greek society

ought to be briefly talked about. In general, ladies had hardly any rights. Inside the

eyes of men, the main purposes of girls in Ancient greek society were to do housework

just like cooking and cleaning, and bear children. They could not vote, individual

property, or perhaps choose a husband, and had being represented by men in all legal

process. In some ways, these Greek females were almost like slaves. There is

a definite relationship between this subordination of ladies and what transpires

in the play. Jerrika decides that he wants to divorce Medea and get married to the

little princess of Corinth, casting Medea aside as though they had hardly ever been committed.

This sort of activity was appropriate by Ancient greek standards, and shows the

subordinate position of the woman, who had simply no say in different matter like this.

Even though some of Medea’s activities were not typical of the average

Greek girl, she nonetheless had behaviour and emotions common among women. For

instance, Medea echoes out against women’s position in world, proclaiming that

they have no second option of which to marry, and that a person can eliminate themselves of the

woman to get one more whenever this individual wants, although a woman has to “keep her

eyes on one exclusively. ” (231-247) Though it truly is improbable that girls went around

openly expressing things on this nature, most likely this frame of mind was distributed

by the majority of or most Greek girls. Later in the play, Medea debates with herself more than

whether or not to kill her children: “Poor heart, allow them to go, have got pity after

the children. ” (1057). This kind of shows Medea’s motherly norms of behavior in that the girl cares

regarding her kids. She challenges to decide in the event that she can accomplish her goal of

revenge against Jason without killing her children since she cares about them

and knows that were there no portion in what their very own father do. Unfortunately, Medea’s

desire to actual revenge upon Jason is greater than her love on her behalf children, and

at the end in the play the girl kills these people. Medea was also a faithful wife to Jason.

The girl talks about how she helped Jason in the quest for the Golden Fleece jacket, then

helped him break free, even eradicating her individual brother. (476-483). The fact that she

was willing to betray her own family to be with Jason shows her loyalty to him.

Consequently , her anger at Jerr over him divorcing her is understandable.

On the other hand, Medea shows several heroic qualities that were certainly not

common among Greek females. For example , Medea is willing to kill her own sibling

to be with Jason. In classical Greece, women and killing were probably not

typically linked. When she eliminates her brother, she shows that she is happy to

do precisely what is necessary to “get the job done”, in this case, to be in his campany Jason.

Second of all, she shows the courage to endure Jason. Your woman believes that she has

recently been cheated and betrayed by simply him. By planning methods for getting back in him for

cheating on her, she is standing for what she believes, which this case is usually

that she was wronged by Jerr, but in a greater sense, the girl with speaking away

against the substandard status of ladies, which properly allows Jason to eliminate

Medea at will. Third, the lady shows that she actually is clever and resourceful. Somewhat

than make use of physical pressure to accomplish her plans, your woman uses her mind instead: “it

is the most suitable to…make away with these people by toxin. ” (384-385) While physical strength

may very well be a heroic quality, cleverness can be as well. She truly does in fact

poison the queen and the california king of Corinth, interestingly, yet , she does

not poison them straight. “I sends the children with gifts…to
