Through his experiences and adventures, Billy becomes a mark more than a pure character. He obviously has more insight into just how things really are, compared to the rest of the characters in the book. Not really accidentally, Billy becomes unstuck in time accurately during the Second World War, hinting therefore at the have to escape the imminence of death as being a constantly pending menace: “The Tralfamadorians don’t have anything to do with his coming unstuck They were merely able to provide him insights in what was actually going on. “(Vonnegut, 18) as such, Billy is a good optometrist as they can appropriate the perspective of the other people, by allowing them to see “what was really occurring. ” His role should be to take the target audience away from the immediate reality, and prove the inconsistency of war.
Eliot Rosewater is another important personality, introduced because Billy’s partner in a mental institution. Rosewater is the one that first starts Billy in good science-fiction writing, specifically into that of Kilgore Bass. In many ways, Rosewater is Billy’s guide inside the novel. Because he reflects a similar anti-war feeling that pervades Slaughterhouse Five, Rosewater seems to be of the same party as Billy and the narrator. I think that Rosewater needs to be given an award intended for his opinion in research fiction because the only thing in a position to save humans from their encapsulated, immediate actuality. The fact that Rosewater usually takes science fictional works as something which is truthful and soothing at the same time indicates that he believes in the presence of alternate realms. As well as Billy or the narrator, Rosewater is actually a victim with the cruelty that he offers seen in the war. An ex captain of infantry, he has witnessed enough of war to comprehend that humankind needs to save itself by simply re-inventing the universe: “So they were aiming to re-invent themselves and their world. The narrator of the account, Billy Pilgrim and Eliot Rosewater are important heroes, because they manage to present, each in his own method, a different and more complete perspective of truth and of the universe.
