The portrayal of moral philosophy inquiries in

Grey’S Anatomy

The episode that I have chosen to write about is Grey’s body structure, episode twenty-five of time 2 . I chose this show because it has its own different ethical issues that happen to be presented in a single event. The main concern that I is going to focus on is the heart transplant for Denny, and the decisions that were created by Izzie and other people regarding the heart transplant. The situation will be examined from a number of different ethical views.

Summary of Issue

The problem in question consists of a heart transplant. Izzie’s significant other (Denny) is on a waiting list for a heart transplant. He has been around the waiting list for over 12 months and a half. Inside the episode, he could be called directly into receive a cardiovascular transplant. However , the doctors discover that the heart in the person we were holding going to consider it via is no longer practical. As a result, Denny would not be provided with any hair transplant. In a different hospital, a unique patient is next up within the heart transplant list (above Denny), and thus, is allowed to receive the up coming heart, which can be from someone that is about to get operated about in the event. Izzie determines to try to move Denny above the other sufferer by lying about Denny’s state. She tries to make his condition appear worse than it actually is in order that he will be provided a priority around the heart implant list. In addition to hiding his condition, she also makes the decision to intentionally end his cardiovascular system in order to mislead the other doctors in thinking that he can in more need of the center transplant than the other individual. The instance ends with her trimming the conduit to his heart-assistance device. Several important ethical questions are relevant to the issue with the heart transplant and the two different potential receivers.

Ethical Issues

The scenario inside the episode boosts a number of different ethical questions. The first perspective to be analyzed is the utilitarian perspective. Utilitarianism is a great ethical idea that is based on producing the very best overall amount of pleasure or perhaps happiness pertaining to the greatest number of individuals, and also about minimizing soreness for the greatest number of people (Harsanyi, 1978). The heart transplant situation can be difficult to look at from a utilitarian point of view. It would likely depend on the number of family and friends that each heart hair transplant patient experienced. Since the show shows Izzie being in love with Denny, it would appear that her decision could be validated through a utilitarian perspective in the event that no additional information about the other cardiovascular transplant patient is present. It is possible that the scenario would be diverse if the different patient was also in love and had a nurturing family that might be devastated in case the patient did not get a new heart.

The 2nd ethical theory is based on Kant’s philosophy relating to ethics. Kant’s principles differ from utilitarianism in this they do not measure the rightness or perhaps wrongness of actions based on outcomes. Rather, Kant’s ethical theory will be based upon whether or not a person fulfills their particular moral work (Nell, 1978). The situation inside the Grey’s Physiology episode is a lot easier to evaluate from a Kantian point of view. Izzie gets the moral obligation to save people and to action honestly. She violates both of those duties when she decides to lie in order to save a patient that she privately cares about, with the expense of another patient that was actually more looking for the cardiovascular system transplant. Izzie’s actions can be highly dishonest from a Kantian point of view.

In my personal opinion, I do believe that Izzie’s words and actions had been unethical. Although they could theoretically be defended from a utilitarian perspective, they cannot be justified by most other ethical theories. She actually is choosing to play favorites and save 1 life of someone she loves at the price of someone more who is actually more needing the center transplant. It is possible that Denny could have anxiously waited and gotten a different heart in a few weeks. The other patient may die as being a direct reaction to Izzie’s choices.
