Ever since the birth of America, two rivalling strains of thought went through the American consciousness. The first was the Jeffersonian concept that the government which in turn governed finest, governed least and that a relatively weak central government was obviously a facilitator of liberty. The contrasting Hamiltonian notion pressured that a solid federal government was required to guard individual liberties and the state as a whole. These tensions were later put in the clashing political positions of the Democrats and Whigs. The Democrat’s followers were mainly agrarian in nature, and perceived the federal government as addressing the passions of the industrialized north. In comparison, the Whig Party reinforced what it saw as improvement for the newest nation in the form of industrialization.
