Ever since the birth of America, two rivalling strains of thought went through the American consciousness. The first was the Jeffersonian concept that the government which in turn governed finest, governed least and that a relatively weak central government was obviously a facilitator of liberty. These tensions were later put in the clashing political positions of the Democrats and Whigs.
