All of us just have to learn how to face these disasters to be able to succeed and survive. Letting go of is not the solution to everything. Desire and perseverance will always stand against the odds in our lives. Rukmani shows the need to keep hope as well as the nectar of life in spite of all the overflowing tragedies. | The KWL Chart The novel began with the protagonist, Rukamani, narrating her individual story within a first person viewpoint. Having a flashback of all the events in her life, Rukmani was able to evaluate all the different occasions in her life.

Rukmani is an educated woman who may be married to a farmer called Nathan when justin was twelve. Her marriage is one of the greatest occasions in her life and she is grateful that her husband is usually kind to her. Rukmani desires to raise a cheerful and healthy family whilst Nathan wishes to buy their own land. That they had their first child Ira, and then then five daughters, Arjun, Thambi, Murugan, Cisura and Selvam. In Rukmani’s later years the girl gave delivery to Kuti. The major conflict in the story was the deal with between life and loss of life for the poor people of the little village.

But when you go underneath the surface, you will notice that it is not just a matter of life and death, yet also a deal with between the evil and the very good that was challenged by the constant problems that took place. The appearance of the tannery was a turning point in Rukmani’s life. Her restriction to Ira’s liberty from the tannery workers foreshadows the difficulties her kid will have with them. A pair of her sons were ignored at the tannery for leading the reach of workers after at some point of doing work there. Your woman deals with shedding her girl because of her marriage that is too good to be true.

Her marriage is also a sort of foreshadowing in the novel. That foreshadows the near future trouble with her virility and secureness. Her spouse returned her to her family members because the girl cannot endure a child. Rukmani tried seeking for Kenny’s support but it was too late because Ira’s partner already identified another partner. Rukmani’s 6th son, Kuti, brought Ira out of depression. She took care of the child until drought came and the family suffered hunger again. Kunthi’s prostitution foreshadows Ira’s similar fortune. Ira turned to prostitution to be able to feed Kuti. Kenny’s comeback symbolises expect them.

He returned coming from his very long absence while using money he may use to put up a clinic. He offers help to Rukmani’s son, Selvam to be his assistant which will Selvam quickly accepted. Kunthi’s blackmail strive exposes Rukmani’s long kept secret (her visit to Kenny’s clinic) and reveals that Nathan fathered Kunthi’s daughters. Just as Nathan and Rukmani’s marriage survived Kunthi’s thunderstorm and became stronger, the family survives the drought and dares to hope once again. Ira recently had an albino kid from prostitution but the friends and family welcomed the kid wholeheartedly inspite of what the villagers think.

Merely when it appears that the relatives had defeat everything, the greatest of the challenges came. These people were told that they need to leave all their land quickly because it had been sold to the tannery. Their decision to the city signifies as the climax because will change the direction of their lives. In the city, they will found Puli, an orphan who helped them search for their son. During their travelling at the city, they found out that their particular son kept his partner and child and moved to some other place. They were as well robbed with the temple and Rukmani wanted to go back to their particular village.

When Nathan died at the serenidad in Rukmani’s arms, the girl went back home with Puli. Rukmani is definitely a strong female. She has been through so many struggles but yet, the girl doesn’t lose hope. The book has several themes: hunger as risk to dignity, knowledge because power, and importance of fertility. Hunger and poverty is a powerful foe to somebody. People is going to do everything intended for fear of being hungry, even sacrifice their pride. Rukmani shed her sons because of craving for food. Her older sons seek out new comes from other terrain, another boy was wiped out for thieving, leaving Rukmani grieving.

To get fear of craving for food her daughter turned to prostitution. She himself almost slain someone for thinking the last piece of their particular rice had been taken. In the novel, craving for food and lower income breeds individuals that has no dignity. People with understanding hold electric power. The tannery won resistant to the workers because they have more knowledge. Intended for Rukmani, white-colored men have electric power and so the girl turned to Kenny. Kunthi uses her familiarity with Rukmani and Nathan’s secrets to physical exercise evil electric power. Puli’s familiarity with the city helped Rukmani and Nathan to watch out for their son.

The good characters inside the novel were the ones who apply their understanding to very good deeds. Significance of fertility is usually shown over the novel. Not just the fertility of women although also the fertility of the land. The lady sought the assistance of Kenny intended for fear of infecundity and this triggered Kunthi to blackmail her. Ira’s complications were also brought on by her infertility. She lost her partner for not having the capacity to produce him a child. The fertility in the land is a symbol of life, it is important to the villagers to get when the terrain does not generate, the people can starve.

The bullocks had been related to the peasants in the land. The bullocks focus on the a harmonious relationship of nature. The bullocks, like the cowboys, suffered from the injustice of overwork. They will overwork for owners to make a living every day. The sari is a sorce of dignity, position, and pride. Rukmani’s sari on her wedding party shows that her father was the headman and this she originates from important persons. The Hinduism belief, dharma was present in the story. It was demonstrated in the novel when Rukmani sold the sari along with their bullocks and other assets to pay for the land that they live.

By selling her most prized ownership, she minimizes her accessory to life goods while an important step toward achieving the hindu advantage of dharma. Rukmani is known as a strong words of the poor because your woman seaks with carity and truth. The girl gets more robust in every concern because of her devotion to truth.
