In 1850, a doc called the Fugitive Slave Act was passed. Primarily, this doc dealt with the reclaiming of runaway slaves. This legislation allowed southerners to demand the federal government for capturing runaway slaves who had fled the Southern and may always be living in the North. The Fugitive Slave Act and the laws that went with this only triggered controversy in the North. This kind of split the North and South. In reaction to this kind of, some northern states approved laws forbidding state officials to enforce the Meandering Slave Law, which only angered the southern says. Northerners came into existence aware of the hypocrisy of slavery to become resolved to get rid of slavery. Various abolitionists did start to take action to aid slaves break free. This major controversy above the runaway slaves sparked quick the City War.
Fundamental rights that Americans organised were denied to suspected runaway slaves. One should remember that even though some Africa Americans in the North were free, they may be considered a suspected runaway. Suspected errant slaves, regardless if they were free of charge, were denied the right to a jury and held the duty of resistant, no longer where they blameless until proven guilty, these people were assumed responsible. When Northerners heard that basic rights were being refused to American slaves, they will wanted to end slavery immediately. America would appear to be hypocrites if they were denying the basic rights that they had battled for against Britain. The following quote can be from a speech provided by Frederick Douglas on the 4th of Come july 1st 1852:
To him American slaves your celebration is known as a sham, the boasted liberty an unholy license, your national achievement, swelling pride, your appears of celebrating are clear and heartless, your denunciation of tyrants, brass-fronted impudence, your shouts of freedom and equality, hollow mockeryare to him mere bombast, fraud, deceptiveness, impiety, and hypocrisy a thin veil to hide up offences which would disgrace a nation of savages (p. 178 Lenders History, Zinn).
This talk about by Frederick Douglas stated exactly what the northern antislavery citizens noticed in the South, hypocrisy and fraud. That they knew that their oppression to slaves paralleled towards the oppression they felt coming from Britain not too long ago. Since the Souths entire economy was based upon the developing of natural cotton, and that slaves were had to work the fields, it was apparent the fact that South will not ban slavery easily.
Prior to much controversy arose, a large number of Northern residents did not have an opinion and remained impartial on the issue of slavery in the South. When the Captivity Act brought on a commotion in the North, writers required action to aid spread the message towards the unbiased individuals. Publications including Uncle Toms Cabin, by Harriet Beecher Stowe, and antislavery newspaper publishers and publications, such as The Liberator, became available. This content and testimonies produced a greater awareness of captivity in Northerners. As time passed, the Northerners began to take sides on the issue and the majority of those were antislavery. Debates, arguments and shoves for change got the Northerners more involved and more determined to defeat the South, which usually now seemed like a different nation. That was how divided the North and South had become as a result of Fugitive Servant Act. To try and settle captivity on their own, northerners helped slaves escape the South through something named the Underground Railroad and also other extreme abolitionists led revolts.
When the north abolitionists got action, the Civil Warfare seemed more inevitable after that ever. Northerners were stealing slaves and mobs had been forming. One may think that you can not steal people, but to the Southerners slaves were real estate not humans. Harriet Tubman, a former servant, ran a business called the Underground Railroad in which white colored abolitionists might house runaway slaves then send all of them further North. Slaves travelled house to house and concealed until we were holding safe from The southern area of slave owners. Southerners had been outraged on the ease the slaves could reach the North. The laws in the new Slavery Act had helped little. Besides slaves running away, the Southerners had to bother about extreme abolitionists who produced mobs and held protests. In May of 1854, a Boston mafia of abolitionists tried to save a meandering slave, Anthony Burns, and although they were not able to save him, they had cost the government a lot more than 100, 500 dollars. Understanding that demonstrations including the one placed for Anthony Burns could continue, the federal government began to try to end captivity. At this time, the Southerners, unsatisfied with the governments plans to abolish slavery, threatened to secede in the Union. The Civil Warfare was the consequence.
Because of the Fugitive Slave Action of 1850, events and ideas had been ignited which in turn sparked the Civil Conflict. The Servant Act improved awareness of the hypocrisy inside the South as well as the immorality of slavery. Due to the action used by Northern abolitionists and their willpower to end captivity, they helped bring upon the Civil War in which they won and abolished captivity.
