Everyone should have pleasure in their beginnings and should not really be ashamed of their nationality. Many people today do not adopt their background because consider they do not easily fit in. Tan creates, “A gooey rock cod with bulging fish sight that pleaded not to be thrown right into a pan of hot oil” (Tan P3). Her utilization of the word ‘bulging’ gives all of us a visual from the eyes from the fish. Instead of giving a thorough description from the eyes, she uses a unique word that enables us to visualize that the fishs eyes were poking out. Tan as well writes, “What would he think of our noisy Oriental relatives whom lacked appropriate American manners” (Tan P2). Tan brands American good manners as “proper” but describes her relatives and their Chinese language customs because “noisy”. Her use of diction allows readers to understand what she was feeling within this dinner. Sachwani 2 Color also uses the aid of imagery to provide someone with a better depiction from the scenery of that night. But , Tan has not been describing how she observed the food, yet how your woman feared Robert would. “A plate of squid, their very own backs crisscrossed with cutlery markings and so they resembled bicycle tires” (Tan P3). The use of images that describes ‘bicycle tires’ marked in to the squids again allows someone to visualize what the squid appeared as if on the dinner table. Tan’s utilization of imagery exemplifies her tranny of anxiety, then relief and acceptance with her audience through the text. Last but not least, Tan uses simile to compare two unlike points using the words “like”, or “as”. When she was initially describing the minister’s boy, she lets us know that they can be not of the same background. Suntan writes, “He was not China, but as white-colored as Martha in the manger” (Tan P1). Tan’s explanation of Robert compares him to Virgin Mary.

In the beginning, Amy feels shame in the differences between her along with Robert’s family. However , following her single mother’s lesson, she discovered that instead of allowing others’ responses to acquire her to shame, the lady should be pleased with her diverse heritage and culture.
