Morpurgo paints a mental picture with the setting his or her bunker is correct in front of no-man’s land plus the enemy right on the other side of no-man’s area. He performs this so thereader has an knowledge of how close the foe is to Tommy.

The final fictional element found in this book is definitely imagery. Morpurgo uses image, auditory, and olfactory imagery in the book. He uses oral when Charlie, Tommy, Hanley, and the remaining squad happen to be sitting in the bunker and Hanley is ordering them to make a break for it but Charlie ignores the buy and the remaining portion of the squad techniques with Hanley. Morpurgo describes the extremely of the equipment guns and the screams with the soldiers that have been cut brief.
