Societies often exercise complicated religious events and daily services which might be seemingly reasonless, but specify their lifestyle and give them a distinct persona. In “Body Ritual among the list of Nacirema”, author Horace Miner (1956) recalls his studies about a “North American group called the Nacirema, residing in the place between the Canadian Cree, the Yaqui and Taraumare of Mexico, and the Carib and Arawak of the Antilles” (Miner, 1956). During his expedition, Miner (1956) viewed various outwardly strange Nacirema methods such as “using magical comprim and charms to defend against ailments, or perhaps drilling slots in their the teeth, so they can insert supernatural substances that pull friends” (Miner 1956). In order to better appreciate a society’s culture, exploration methods like the “life study course approach”, “role taking”, and “resocialization” should be studied.
In respect to Schaefer (2012) a “life training course approach focuses on the interpersonal factors that influence persons throughout their lives and recognizes that biological improvements mold although do not determine human behavior” (Schaefer, 2012).
In Miner’s (1956) writings, this individual explains the Nacirema custom of informing a “listener” one’s problems, so he can “exorcise the devils stuck in a person’s head” (Miner, 1956). This is similar to the American custom of going to a psychologist to be able to determine and remedy factors behind unhealthy thoughts or mental issues. Even though Miner (1956) does not provide a specific example of an individual’s scheduled appointment with a “listener, ” it is likely that a person’s challenges resulted by family concerns, physical qualities, social position, where 1 lives, or any type of other “social factors” (Miner, 1956). Merely was to examine my life making use of the “life study course approach, ” I would.. roach, role choosing, or resocialization.
According to Miner (1995) “without the power and guidance of early crude and irrelevant magic, man could not have mastered his practical difficulties as he has been doing, nor may man include advanced to the higher periods of civilization” (Miner, 1956). Before deeming a culture as worthless, think about how each traditions started, no culture began with the most logical belief system or way of living, so despite the fact that this group may not seem to be so advanced, it may you should be starting and have many long term opportunities intended for greatness.
