The feel of magic by lorena hickok article

The book I chose to read is referred to as The Touch of Magic written by Lorena

A. Hickok. The story involved Anne Sullivan Macy, Sue Kellers fantastic

teacher. I had never heard of Anne before I actually read this book, but while searching

in the catalogue my mom told me who she was and the girl seemed like she would

be a unique person to accomplish on. I was right.

Anne Sullivan Macy was born on April 16, 1866 in Feeding Hillsides

Massachusetts. At the age of nine the lady was taken to the borders of Tewksbury

Massachusetts with her three year old brother Jimmie. Generally there, they were brought to

the Ma State Infirmary. Not mainly because they were mentally sick or

anything, yet because that were there nowhere otherwise to go.

Their particular mother acquired died of tuberculosis and their father had left these people.

None with their relatives needed them mainly because Annie was nearly impaired and Jimmie

had a problem with his hip and had to walk using a crutch. Annies one

year old sister was taken right away by her aunt and uncle because she was

darling. No person knew where you can send them so that is how the girl ended up on the

infirmary.

A couple of months when they had came, Jimmie got deathly sick. The doctor

s couldnt do anything for him and however he earlier away. Annie took this

unbelievably hard for she had realized that Jimmie was the only factor she experienced

ever loved.

Annies attitude then made worse even more since she believed she experienced

nothing still left. She would toss hissy meets at the nurses and stop and shout.

Believe it or not, this is certainly one of the personality traits i most enjoy about

Miss Macy. Your woman was intense and didnt let any person tell her how to proceed. Even

although she could not see, the lady lived her own life in her own tiny world.

One other trait that I admire about her is that she was a dreamer. I realize

I i am a big dreamer and can fail to find a way out in my thoughts sometimes, although her dreams

werent just like mine. Annie dreamt of being able to see, but usually dreamt of

going to university. Annie wanted to learn yet had no-one to teach her.

One day, in regards to a year after Jimmies death, the State Table of Non profit organizations

came by to browse around. Annie was so fired up because your woman heard they could be

able to give her to varsity. When they were leaving the lady jumped in the garden

and yelled out that she wished to go to school. The men asked her that which was

wrong with her and she explained to them that she was nearly blind.

A few days and nights later, after Annie thought she experienced blown her chance of at any time

going to school, a girl through the ward arrived saying that Annie was to head to school.

Annie was ecstatic and couldnt wait to look. This is the first major function that

I believe led to Annies success.

The morning finally arrived and Annie arrived at the Perkins Institution for

the Blind in South Boston around midday. She couldnt like it initially but after

became well-accepted. While the various other girls stayed at in great cottages, Annie

stayed in an old new with 60 year old Laura Bridgman. Laura was window blind

deaf, and dumb.

Laura Bridgman choose to go to that school forty several years previously and was

taught the manual abc. This is where you communicate simply by spelling phrases on

every single others palms and then experience an object to learn that the term spelled is a

word experienced.

Annie was simply fascinated with this way of communicating that she

discovered the manual alphabet. That is why I believe Laura was the person who had the

best influence in Annie. Annie would dedicate hours talking with Laura. She

might tell Laura what was occurring in school and things around them and Laura

would talk about her feelings and thoughts back to Annie.

Annie was good in school and her teachers noticed that. She had a difficult experience

with Braille but after having a lot of hard work, she got it. I think that is certainly another

excellent trait regarding Annie. Her eagerness and willingness to master. an

education was what she needed all her life and her wish finally came true.

Following she discovered Braille, Annie would search the collection for literature. She adored

to read.

Summer season quickly emerged and all girls, even Laura, left for property. The

teachers refused to deliver Annie returning to Tewksbury so one of them was able to find

her work doing small work at a rooming residence.

One of the roomers, a young man, really took to Annie and felt remorseful for

her. One day he told her that he believed he realized of someone who also could help her

eyes. Annie agreed to see Dr . Bradford at the Carney Catholic Medical center. He

was adament on functioning even though your woman explained to him that the lady had previously had

two unsuccessful functions. He confident her and started operate later that

summer.

This individual first slice away the scabs for the insides of her eyelids. This would

stop the scabs from scratch her eyeballs. He said that he would deal with her

for a couple of months after which in a year operate again.

A year passed and Annie, now sixteen, was back. Doctor Bradford sensed good

and hopeful that the operation can be successful. Following many days to be

bandaged up, the bandages were removed. Afraid to open her eye, Annie finally

did and was able to find. Not one 100 % mind you, nevertheless she may see

depth and the doctor was grinning. Being able to discover is another thing I think

that led up to Annies success.

Now that Annie could see she had no reason to return to school. Your woman

had nowhere to go, hence the teachers allow her stay and help with the younger youngsters.

She still attended classes and became popular that your woman was the best performer

Valedictorian in her 6th and last year of faculty.

The day was so particular, but every Annie could think about was what she

would do after university. Annie had no idea what she desired, but several

teachers declared that they might be capable of finding her work. Annie couldnt want to

think about it thus left to get the summer.

During a summer time, a notification came for Annie. It was from her primary

asking her to read the enclosed page. The letter was coming from a man by Alabama

requesting the Perkins Institute if they did recommend a fantastic teacher for his 6

year old daughter. She was deaf, window blind, and dumb, her brand was Sue Keller.

Twenty year old Annie decided to go. Upon March your five, 1887 Annie headed out

to The state of alabama. This, I believe would have to be the third celebration that led up to Annie

s success.

At first Annie thought the lady could get to Helen, yet later discovered

that it wouldnt be that easy. Helen was obviously a dangerous child, like an dog, but

what do you expect should you cant listen to or observe? After a few days Annie attempted to

get through with her by being soft, but during one of Helens rages the lady knocked

away Annies two front teeth.

Annie made a decision to take the initiative and tried disciplining Helen.

Some thing of which her parents never did. She thought it would be finest if your woman

could be alone with Sue so they will moved into their own little bungalow a few

minutes away from Helens parents.

Annie started instructing Helen the manual abece that she had discovered

from Laura Bridgman. Sue was able mean things backside, but still that were there no

meaning to her. In regards to a month following Annies introduction, Helen finally figured out

the word Annie was punctuational was the phrase of the target she held in her hands.

Soon after this Helen starting writing in Braille. A lot of it couldnt make

sense, but as she was learning sentences it got better.

Following about a year of dealing with Helen, Annie decided to take her to

Boston. That they didnt use long presently there, but Sue soon started to be a celebrity.

Everyone was interested in Helen, who wouldnt be?

Throughout their long time of fame, Sue and Annie met a whole lot of neat

interesting persons including a excellent young man called John Macy. He worked

for a publication and was one of the greatest proponents Helen and Annie ever had.

When Helen grew up, Steve decided that he would inquire Annie to marry him. Annie for

first wasnt sure as they was 11 years young than her. She finally

said yes and they were married on, may 2, 1905. Annie was now thirty-nine and

Steve was twenty-eight.

The marriage just lasted ten years ahead of John decided to sail to

Europe. It wasnt a divorce, but mare like a separation. Annie knew that she

can count on him if the lady needed anything at all, so it isnt like they hated every

other, it really didnt exercise.

Annie and Helen spent the rest with their lives jointly touring the

United States and parts of Canada, talking to people and undertaking presentations.

Annie off and on of these years, acquired sick. At times really awful and

occasionally just tiny colds. In October 19, 1936, it absolutely was different. One or two

of days before, Annie had appeared happy and was laughing and cheerful just like

her old self. On in the evening though, she slipped into a coma rather than woke up

once again. She experienced quietly previous away, nevertheless lived an excellent, long life of seventy years.

Helen was fifty-six.

I absolutely enjoyed looking over this book and would definitely suggest it to

anyone who wants an interesting authentic story. The book educated me a whole lot about the

blind and deaf and how they manage their unlucky handicap. It taught me

that while you might have a handicap there is nothing impossible. Provided that

you put your brain to this you can do anything at all. Anyone who loves an inspirational

novel would love this book.
