Annotated Bibliography “On Compassion” Ascher, Barbara. “On Compassion”. 5O Essays.

Ed. Samuel Cohen. Boston: Bedford/St. Martin’s, 2004. 35-38. Print. Barbara Ascher’s dissertation offers examples of everyday life in New York City to back up her thoughts about compassion. She uses two different encounters to support her disputes and factors. The initially encounter engaged a woman, with a child, giving money into a homeless person as he starred at the valuable child. Aschenbecher questioned why the woman offered to the desolate. Was it fear or compassion that motivated the gift?

The other encounter included a destitute person entering a cafe, smelling of cigarettes and urine as well as the owner hastening to hand the person a coffee and a bag of food. 2 times Ascher provides witnessed this and a single argument made was, what compelled over to nourish the man? Was it as a result of pity? Attention? Compassion? Because winter comes the mayor kicks each of the homeless with the streets and into Bellevue Hospital. Aschenbecher thinks that what the gran is doing displays compassion, yet another area of her fears it is because of “raw humanity problem our sensibilities”(38).

She uses interesting words and phrases to quite simply describe just how people dislike to face reality and see just how life is really. People just walk beyond the homeless, pretend that nothing is incorrect and a lot more perfect, failing to remember about the other human beings in rags, starving, and living day by day on the street in addition to parks. For the majority of it had not been a lifestyle picked, yet persons only find what is correct in front of all their eyes, “An awareness of cloths with noises that make simply no sense and scream in inarticulate rage”(38). Ascher thinks and claims that, “Compassion is not only a character feature like sunny disposition.

It must be learned, and it is learned with adversity in our windows, coming through the gates of the yards, them of our villages, adversity that becomes and so familiar that we begin to discover and accord with that. “(38) Aschenbecher then, analyzes the destitute to the Historic Greeks, reminding us of our common humankind. In my opinion, I really believe that the point of this composition was to talk with people through writing. Ascher made incredibly good details about her beliefs about compassion. For example , how the girl believes compassion is discovered and not just a character trait. I for one believe her.

Being compassionate is not something which you should identify yourself while, but much more an action of doing or giving without second-guessing, or thinking of it. Is actually something you pick up as children in your home and community and it expands on you, it might be part of your identity. In Ascher’s essay she gets her point across with lots of arguments to back it up. The girl uses runs into from everyday life so visitors can see and understand where she is received from. Ascher made me change the way i see and think about compassion. That’s why she is such an excellent writer for the reason that execution of her operate is just good.
